The papermakers are from a small community of indigenous Otomi in Mexiko who still maintain this ancient tradition of papermaking. The paper is made from the bark of the Amate wild fig tree (xalama), nettle tree (jonote), and mulberry (moral).
First the bark gets washed, then boiled for several hours in a solution of lime juice. The strips get laid on a wooden board then patted until they fuse together and form the desired texture and then dried in the sun.
