Two Countries, One Long Journey - My trip to Japan and Taiwan
Teilen
Landing in Japan
We landed in Tokyo after two stopovers — first in Abu Dhabi, then a short visit in Taipei with my mother-in-law. A long trip, but stepping into Japan again always feels like opening a familiar book.
Kobe: friends & bbq
Our first evening in Kobe was spent with old friends, grilling and laughing over plates of perfectly marbled Kobe beef. Jetlag didn’t stand a chance.
Osaka Expo
The next morning we headed straight to the Expo in Osaka. The whole day was packed with excitement, crowds, architecture, and that mix of noise and creativity only Osaka can deliver.
Seto Inland Sea
The following day we boarded a ferry from Himeji and crossed into the islands of the Seto Inland Sea. The next days became a small dream — museums, installations, and the slow rhythm of island life, all tied to the Setouchi Art Festival.
Matsuyama Onsen Break
After all the walking and island-hopping, we needed a recharge — an onsen break in Matsuyama. Hot water, slow mornings, and nothing but steam for company.
Quick Stop in Hiroshima
Before returning to Tokyo we made a short stop in Hiroshima — a quiet pause, but an important one.
Tokyo Again
Back in Tokyo the days filled up fast: shopping for fountain pens, catching up with friends, and being completely blown away by teamLab. No matter how often you go, the city always finds a way to surprise you.
Taipei: rain, pens & family
Taipei welcomed us with rain. And more rain. But the days were still full — family, friends, and yes, more fountain-pen shopping. We were definitely ready to escape the weather and move south.
Tainan: warmth & history
In Tainan the sky finally cleared. We met more old friends and spent our days learning about the city’s rich history — temples, food stalls, and colours that feel older than the streets themselves.
Kaohsiung Wedding Finale
We ended our trip in Kaohsiung at the beach, celebrating the wedding of dear friends in 30-degree heat. After drinking games, speeches, and late-night karaoke, the only thing left was the long way back home.
